The Dedication of the Nauvoo Temple in 2002 fulfilled the ancient prophecy of Zechariah! The fast that mourned the destruction of the first and second Temples in Jerusalem was to become a feast of celebration. And in 2002, this fast fell on the day the Nauvoo Temple was dedicated.
Understanding the symbols of the current Nauvoo Temple is in many cases discovering an ancient language. In some cases, as old as creation… the foundational work of the Savior. In others, the concepts are those used in His ancient tutelage of Abraham; Or the words of His mortal ministry. And in some cases, they are as recent as the revelations received by Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and the other early Saints who constructed the original Nauvoo Temple.
On May 24th, 1845, the capstone was placed on the original Nauvoo Temple, signifying completion of the Temple walls. It was placed by Brigham Young, William W. Player, Tarlton Lewis, Elisha Everett, John Hill, Edward Miller, Charles W. Patten, Samuel Hodge, Hans C. Hanson and Thomas Jaap.
Once in place the Saints participated in the hosanna shout and sang a song written by W. W. Phelps specifically for the occasion entitled “The Capstone Song.”
